Miré un laurel, cuyo desdén sagrado,
de espesa rama, Apolo no vencía.
Allí para el desdén Dafne aún vivía
y a Febo aún no perdona su cuidado.
¿Qué mucho que mi amor desengañado
ensordezca a experiencias cada día,
si presta ejemplo un dios a mi porfía
y vive lo difunto a lo adorado?
Más quiere Apolo a Dafne con firmeza,
aunque imposible, que la quiso viva
con la inconstancia que temida lloro.
Tanto quisiera, oh Fili, en tu belleza,
verla tal vez amante, y tal esquiva,
que por constante aun desdén adoro.
