¿Quién es, Gaspar ilustre, el que fallece:
tú en tu dolor o tu fatal hermano?
El no murió, porque con bulto vano
tu pálida memoria nos le ofrece:
tú no, porque en tu oriente resplandece
la luz de un sol que anocheció temprano.
¡Oh, cuánto miente lo que dura humano,
pues del achaque de nacer fenece!
Dichoso aquel que a cuenta de su fama
(no de sus años) vive, y se aconseja
en que a ser inmortales respiramos.
¡Oh envidia (bien que lástima se llama),
llorar al que nos falta, porque deja
de ser lo mismo porque le lloramos!
