Mendoza prodigioso, a quien la fama
jamás es mucha, bien que en todo es toda,
a cuya estirpe sabia sea o goda
ciñe equívoco el sol su virgen rama,
¿cómo arde tanto el sol? ¿Alumbra o ama?,
que aun el propio morir desacomoda.
Si todo el árbol de la vida poda,
¿qué beneficia su segur de llama?
Tanto número espira de mortales
que, muerto, el mismo número contemplo.
Todo el suelo es sepulcro, ya no abrigo.
¿Son castigos, mi Dios, o son señales?
Si señales, dejad para el ejemplo
vidas, que mueren todas del castigo.
