Al viento su esperanza y su porfía,
siguiendo Apolo a Dafne, encomendaba;
el miedo, con que el paso aceleraba,
su blanco pie de plumas guarnecía.
De su madeja el oro reducía
el viento a rayos con que al Sol flechaba,
mientras amor, injusto, preparaba
la victoria mayor a quien huía;
cuando la ninfa exclama al padre undoso,
y, humanando un laurel, halla venganza
del Sol en el auxilio de Peneo.
«¡Ay! -dijo Apolo al árbol desdeñoso-,
¿por qué, si en ti fallece mi esperanza,
verde imagen te ofreces al deseo?»
