A la muerte del excelentísimo señor Almirante de Castilla
Esta corona de triunfante grama,
que adorno fue del Héroe más valiente,
y ya funesto ciñe dignamente
las invisibles sienes de su fama.
Este solio, que en sombras se derrama,
y en dos imperios se miró luciente.
Esta fe que se arroja irreverente
sobre la muerte religiosa llama;
glorias fueron de aquel a quien amaste,
España, y en su pecho le tuviste,
y aquí yace su luz sin ejercicio.
¿O muerte, para qué lo ejecutaste?
¿O cielo, para qué lo permitiste?
O amor, llora no más, que este es tu oficio.
