El trabajo de Fidia ingenioso,
que a Júpiter Olimpio dio la gloria,
fue soberbio despojo de victoria
al tiempo, en nuestra injuria presuroso;

pero al valor de Aquiles animoso
el siempre insigne Homero alzó la historia,
y dio a la fama eterna su memoria
con alta voz del canto generoso.

Yo, que mal puedo ser en honra vuestra
nuevo Homero, consagro, luz de España,
de mis incultos versos la armonía;

Mas si me mira Caliope diestra,
valdrá, si mi deseo no me engaña,
mas que Fidia mortal la musa mía.
