Al fin yaces ¡oh del valor latino
última gloria! por tu fuerte mano,
tentado habiendo reducir en vano
la libertad al orbe, de ella indino.

Tu virtud te guió, perdió el destino;
pero pudo tu esfuerzo soberano
mostrar que fuiste capitán romano,
y sólo sucesor de Bruto dino.

¡Oh si ajena ambición no te moviera
a desnudar el hierro, o ya desnudo,
siguiera tu hazaña la ventura!

Que ninguno tu igual en Roma hubiera;
mas trájote en desprecio el hado crudo
del grave yeso y la virtud segura.
