-XXXII- Mario en Cartago
Del peligro del mar, del hierro abierto
que vibró el fiero Cimbro, y espantado,
huyó la airada voz, salió cansado
de la infelice Birsa Mario al puerto.
Viendo el estéril campo y el desierto
sitio de aquel lugar infortunado,
lloró con él su mal, y lastimado,
rompió así en triste son el aire incierto:
«En tus ruinas míseras contemplo
¡oh destruido muro! cuánto el cielo
trueca, y de nuestra suerte el grande estrago.
«¿Cuál más terrible caso, cual ejemplo
mayor habrá, si puede ser consuelo
a Mario en su dolor el de Cartago?»
