Al triste humor que mísero destilo,
¿cómo no falto? Cómo crece tanto
en medio de la vena de mi llanto
de ardientes ondas este eterno Nilo?
La llama esfuerza mi lloroso hilo,
las lágrimas mi fuego, porque cuanto
templarlos pruebo, en mi dolor levanto
de su concurso un mal mezclado estilo.
No inundó mayor pluvia el duro suelo
de la ancha tierra, ni Etna de su cumbre
exhaló mayor llama sin sosiego.
Deucalión y quien pensó del cielo
regir incauto la perpetua lumbre,
más agua aquí hallarán y más fuego.
