Sombra y vano temor del pensamiento
mi alma en un confuso error condena,
y aparece, de horror medroso llena,
la sañosa aspereza que lamento.
Desmaya en el silencio el sufrimiento,
y al ausencia ensandece más la pena;
crece y arde el desdén, y el miedo enfrena
las iras de un honrado sentimiento.
Revuelvo en la inquieta fantasía
cosas que dan principio a mayor daño,
y no acierto el remedio en tal mudanza.
¿De qué sirve huir, si mi porfía
contrasta, asegurada de su engaño,
y abraza en el peligro a la esperanza?
