Esta sola desierta, ardiente arena,
fatal sepulcro al último occidente,
de armas rotas, de muerta y presa gente
y de sangrientos ríos está llena.

Infamia y honra en un error condena
al corazón cobarde y al valiente;
el premio es desigual; que el uno siente
perpetua gloria, el otro eterna pena.

Con un súbito estrago y espantoso
y confuso desorden acabando,
cedió el valor heroico al africano.

Grave crimen del vulgo temeroso;
que, pues murió, muriera peleando
do murió, todo el reino lusitano.
