Veo el ajeno bien, veo el contento
que ofrece blando amor al pobre estado;
y como al fin doliente, acongojado,
busco un liviano engaño a mi tormento.

Aparto de la pena el pensamiento,
y espero, osadamente aventurado,
nueva gloria en la fuerza del cuidado,
y doy valor seguro al sufrimiento.

Surte incierto mil veces mi deseo,
la presa desparece por quien muero,
y se remonta con desdén perdido.

Temo ser otro insano Salmoneo,
que fingió el no imitable rayo fiero,
y fue con rayo abrasador herido.
