Cante quejas y afán de justa pena
que padecí cuitoso y ofendido,

dolor con esperanza, a do perdido
deseo me inclinó, y al fin vencido
trajo a fuerza arrastrando la cadena.

Tú, a quien rinden su gloria insignes ríos,
favorece, Tarteso padre, el canto
que tierno y simple en honra tuya espira;

que si me dan lugar los males míos,
no sólo oirás de amor gemido y llanto,
más hazañas que Marte airado inspira.
