Después que Mitridates rindió al hado
el fiero pecho, y Asia sacudida,
cayó rota, y la tierra, al fin vencida,
vio el mar de los piratas despojado,
lo que no pudo el medo, el parto osado,
ni virtud de Sertorio esclarecida,
una vil, flaca diestra la temida
cabeza, oh gran Pompeyo, te ha cortado;
y el cuerpo mal cubierto de la arena,
triste ultraje y cruel de humana gloria,
desierto yace. ¡Oh cuánto en ti la dura
suerte discorde se mostró y ajena!
Pues falleciendo tierra a tu victoria,
la tierra falleció a tu sepultura.
