Si no sufría ya la adversa suerte
que más viviera el reino lusitano,
ardiera en guerra fiera, y Marte insano
moviera del contrario el brazo fuerte.

Cuanta saña y furor la tierra vierte,
hierro, fuego enemigo de impía mano
armara, y no entregara al africano
los cobardes despojos de su muerte.

No es vergüenza morir, y la victoria
y vida, el honor no, rendir osado
al ímpetu de Libia violenta.

Fuera sin culpa mísero con gloria,
honrárase en la queja de su hado,
y faltara a sus lágrimas la afrenta.
