Al pie de una alta haya muy sombrosa,
cuando más alto el sol mostraba el día,
mirando el agua clara que corría
por la ribera del Tesín hermosa,

pensando está Vandalio en la rabiosa
ocasión que turbó su fantasía,
tan obstinada el alma en su porfía
cuanto por la ocasión triste y cuidosa:

«¡Ay, suerte desigual! -dijo llorando-,
si está el alma de mí tan separada,
¿tan lejos de ella cómo o por qué vivo?

Dolor, que sin matarme así apretando
te vas, o tu poder no puede nada
o se hace inmortal el hado esquivo.»
