En un olmo Vandalio escribió un día,
do la corteza estaba menos dura,
el nombre y la ocasión de su tristura;
después, mirando al cielo, así decía:

«Tanto crezcas, ¡oh bella planta mía!,
que al más alto ciprés venzas de altura,
y tanta sea mayor tu hermosura
cuanta aquella de Dórida sería.

Crezcan a par del olmo en su grandeza
las letras del amado y dulce nombre,
y en él hagan perpetua su memoria,

porque los que vendrán sepan que un hombre
levantó el pensamiento a tanta alteza
que es digno al menos de inmortal renombre.»
