Dijo el doctor Petrarca sabiamente:
«Pobre y desnudas vas, Filosofía»,
lamentando su tiempo en que antevía
las faltas y miserias del presente;

do el vicio reina ya tan sueltamente,
que valen poco, y menos cada día,
la bondad, el saber, la valentía,
del mejor, o más sabio, o más valiente.

Mas cuanto el mal está más encumbrado
y el mundo aprueba más lo que debiera
tenerse por infamia y maleficio,

tanto merece ser más estimado
el virtuoso obrar, pues ya no espera
la virtud premio, ni castigo el vicio.
