Creció el infierno aquí, Nilo violento
de llamas, y tan ciego en lo enemigo
que de sus iras no dejó un testigo
ni a sus estragos permitió un lamento.
No pareció del cielo tal portento
(aun en venganzas disfrazado amigo),
que el cielo, entre el presagio y el castigo,
siempre dejó caber al escarmiento.
Ardió el Vesubio; no la inclemencia
de Júpiter honró su infiel desmayo,
ni a rayos de agua le anegó el tridente.
El que tiene por alma la violencia
no ha menester para morir el rayo,
pues nace fulminado un accidente.
