No donde plumas de oro el Tajo baña,
cisne de Lusitania peregrino,
es mayor, porque muera de divino
cuando su voz postrera al mar engaña.

Si cisne muere allí, cisne de España
en don Álvaro nace peregrino,
que a la inmortalidad abre camino,
con nueva voz que alegra y desengaña.

Vario en lenguas y en plumas, hoy dudosa
hace su patria, porque el suelo hispano
le pleitea, y el lacio y luso suelo.

Yo que quiero acertar su patria hermosa,
su espíritu contemplo soberano,
que éste no puede ser sino del cielo.
