Gerardo, quien su engaño repetido
gime, aunque gima presto en mil horrores,
merece el sol de eternos resplandores,
a favor de la noche de su olvido.
Mas, quien no rompe fueros al sentido
en vano pide al cielo sus favores;
que el fuerte auxilio de vencer errores
suele tardar, cuando ha de ser perdido.
¡Qué importa que yo diga que navego
al puerto que conduce el desengaño,
si el alma oculta ídolos ahora!
Mas, ¡ay señor!, que si el error es ciego,
supo perder la vista, que fue daño,
porque abre más los ojos cuando llora.
