Ya el rigor importuno y grave hielo
desnuda los esmaltes y belleza
de la pintada tierra, y con tristeza
se ofende en niebla oscura el claro cielo.
Mas, Pacheco, este mismo hórrido suelo
reverdece, y pomposo su riqueza
muestra, y del blanco mármol la dureza
desata de Favonio el tibio vuelo.
Pero el dulce color y hermosura
de nuestra humana vida cuando huye,
no torna, ¡oh mortal suerte! ¡oh breve gloria!
Mas sola la virtud nos asegura
que el tiempo avaro, aunque esta flor destruye,
contra ella nunca osó intentar victoria.
