Dulce el fuego de amor, dulce la pena,
y dulce de mi daño es la memoria
cuando renueva amor la antigua historia
que a su grave tormento me condena;
mas cuando hallo mi esperanza llena
de bien y de promesas de victoria,
un súbito dolor turba mi gloria,
y todos mis contentos desordena;
que será esta luz pura de belleza
la fe del justo amor en poca tierra
vuelta, y el fuego muerto que me inflama.
¡Oh vano ardor de la inmortal flaqueza!
¿Si el fin que ofrece paz de tanta guerra
no dejará aun ceniza de mi llama?
