Cuando el fiero tirano de Oriente
la afrenta que sufrió con osadía
se aventura a pagar, y, España mía,
contrasta con valor su saña ardiente,

amor se esfuerza en mi pasión doliente,
y finge, y me presta una alegría,
vana, para que sienta en mi porfía,
del bien cayendo, el mal más duramente.

Yo cuido defenderme en mejor suerte,
y resistir sin miedo el duro asalto,
y descansar seguro en mi sosiego.

Cuando importa mostrar el pecho fuerte,
me pierdo, y hallo de valor más falto
y rindo el corazón al hierro y fuego.
