Sobre las ondas del helado Ibero,
incauto niño, y sin saber, corría,
cuando el hielo, que fuerza no tenía,
quebrando, se mostró crudo y severo.
El río, que veloz iba ligero,
con el tributo el cuerpo al mar envía:
la cabeza que el hielo sostenía
por memoria quedó del caso fiero.
La madre que buscando al niño andaba
por la ribera, viendo el rostro luego
asió dél y sacó lo que quedaba.
«¡Ay cruel hado -dijo- extraño y ciego!
Pues de lo que parí no me tocaba
más parte que ésta, ésta consuma el fuego.»
