Cercado de terror, lleno de espanto,
en la barca del triste pensamiento,
los remos en las manos del tormento,
por las ondas del mar del propio llanto,

navegaba Vandalio; y si algún tanto
la esperanza le da propicio el viento,
la imposibilidad en un momento
le cubre el corazón de oscuro manto.

«Vandalio, ¿qué harás hora? -decía-.
Fortuna te ha privado de la estrella
que era en el golfo de la mar tu guía.»

Y andándola a buscar, ciego sin ella,
cuando por más perdido se tenía,
la vio ante los nublados ir más bella.
