Ando siempre, señor, de pena en pena,
de llanto en llanto y de uno en otro fuego;
ni por andar ni por tener sosiego
dolor afloja o mi fortuna es buena.
El alma de años ya y de daños llena,
que ciega nuestros apetitos ciego
debría volver de tan dañoso juego
a vida más tranquila y más serena.
Si el alma misma es causa de su daño,
¿por qué la causa? Y si la fuerza el hado,
el arbitrio ¿qué es del?, ¿qué libre tiene?
Pues yo no sé entender mal tan extraño,
suplícoos me digáis de este pecado
quién es primera causa o dónde viene.
