En el paso más duro y más estrecho,
en el más peligroso, en el más fuerte,
en el que temo más que no la muerte,
y en el que más deseé por mi provecho,
me tiene puesto Amor, que Amor lo ha hecho,
en el dudoso arbitrio de la suerte,
a que viva contento en que se acierte,
o que no, y muera en lágrimas deshecho.
Solía el alma ya vivir segura,
confiada del bien sin merescello,
esperando ese trance en que ha de verse.
Mas quien tiene su vida en aventura,
colgada, como dicen, de un cabello,
ved si tiene razón para temerse.
