Como el que enfermedad de muerte tiene,
que está de su salud desconfiado,
ni se puede alegrar del mal pasado
ni gozo entero haber del bien que viene;

pensando en el morir, si se detiene,
es porque el plazo cierto no ha llegado,
de cuya causa el mejorar de estado
ni lo asegura ya, ni lo entretiene;

tal el triste Vandalio en la estrecheza,
envuelto en un temor con mil temores,
a la bella Amarílida decía:

«Poca seguridad, menos firmeza,
no me dejan gozar vuestros favores;
que un recelo mortal me los desvía.»
