Bastar debiera, ¡ay, Dios!, bastar debiera,
señora, el ser cruel, áspera y dura,
sin que por adornar la hermosura
que al mundo es hoy un sol, tal nombre os diera.

Bastar debiera, ¡ay, Dios!, mostraros fiera
siempre a la obstinación de mi locura,
sin que por el color mi desventura
de nueva crueldad temor tuviera.

Si queréis que a entender me dé el vestido
cuál es la condición esquiva y dura,
volverlo del revés y será cierto:

lo encarnado cruel quede escondido,
mostrad lo blanco que es limpieza pura;
será el engaño así más encubierto.
