Como la obscura noche al claro día
sigue con inefable movimiento,
así sigue al contento el descontento
de amor y la tristeza al alegría;

sigue al breve gozar luenga porfía,
al dulce imaginar sigue el tormento,
y al alcanzado bien el sentimiento
del perdido favor que lo desvía.

De contrarios está su fuerza hecha;
sus tormentas he visto y sus bonanzas,
y nada puedo ver que me castigue.

Ya sé qué es lo que daña y aprovecha;
mas ¿cómo excusará tantas mudanzas
quien ciego tras un ciego a ciegas sigue?
