Mientras de parte en parte se abrasaba
y en vivas llamas la gran Roma ardía,
al alto cielo el gran clamor subía
del pueblo todo, que su mal lloraba;
sólo en parte Nerón cantando estaba
do el clamor miserable escarnecía,
y el incendio mayor más alegría,
y el mayor llanto más placer le daba.
Así, de en medio el alma donde estáis,
veis, señora, mi fuego y toda en llanto
la turba de mis tristes pensamientos;
y tanto más de verlo os alegráis,
cuanto más ardo y por vos lloro, y cuanto
me llegan más al cabo mis tormentos.
