Mientras amor con deleitoso engaño
daba color a la esperanza mía,
el seso, lo mejor que él entendía,
declarar procuró mi mal extraño.

Pero ya que llegar a ser tamaño
le vio, y que iba creciendo cada día,
dejó la menos necesaria vía
por más considerar el propio daño.

Desde allí, va en silencio y noche oscura,
con mil acuerdos de mi bien pasado
y del presente mal, paso mi vida,

que en tal extremo está de desventura,
que, si hay firmeza en miserable estado,
ni puedo ya subir ni dar caída.
